Description
All of us are concerned about the possibility of losing cognitive abilities
as we age. This is a very serious concern, as scientific research has shown
that as we age, we begin to experience a loss in our mental performance –
memory, learning, and concentration – which can markedly impact on our
quality of life and even on our productivity! Quite simply, this loss of cognitive
ability is a part of the normal aging process, and it can be accelerated by
certain negative lifestyle practices. The good news is that scientific research
and clinical investigations have shown that PS, a naturally occurring phospholipid,
plays a critical role in maintaining optimal mental performance. Our generation
now has the potential to live easily into the tenth decade of age, due to significant
advances in nutrition science that support the use of several key nutrients.
PS is one of those key nutrients. It is more important than ever to care for
your most important physical asset – your mind!
Health Benefits
[edit] Memory and Cognition
Early studies of phosphatidylserine distilled the chemical from bovine brain. Because of concerns about BSE, however, modern studies and commercially available products are made from soybeans.
The fatty acids attached to the serine in the soy product are not
identical to those in the bovine product, which is also impure.
However, preliminary studies indicate that the soy product is at least
as effective as that of bovine origin. [1][2]
On May 13, 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
gave "qualified health claim" status to phospahtidylserine, stating
that "Consumption of phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of dementia
in the elderly" and "Consumption of phosphatidylserine may reduce the
risk of cognitive dysfunction in the elderly"
[edit] Sports Nutrition
Phosphatidylserine has been demonstrated to speed up recovery,
prevent muscle soreness, improve well-being, and might possess
ergogenic properties in athletes involved in cycling, weight training
and endurance running. PS has been reported to be an effective
supplement for combating exercise-induced stress and preventing the
physiological deterioration that accompanies too much exercise.[3]
In recent studies, PS has been shown to enhance mood in a cohort of
young people during mental stress and to improve accuracy during
tee-off by increasing the stress resistance of golfer's.[4]
[edit] Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
First pilot studies indicate that PS supplementation might be beneficial for children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.[5][6]
