Description
How does it work?
Metrogel contains the active ingredient metronidazole, which is a type of medicine called an antibiotic. Metronidazole is used to treat infections caused by bacteria and other micro-organisms called protozoa.
Metronidazole works by entering bacterial and protozoal cells and interfering with their genetic material (DNA). It damages the DNA and also prevents the bacteria and protozoa from forming new DNA. This ultimately results in metronidazole killing the micro-organisms, which clears up the infection.
Metronidazole kills a wide variety of bacteria that are known collectively as anaerobic bacteria. This means that they do not need oxygen to grow and multiply.
Metronidazole is applied to the skin to treat fungating tumours, wounds, leg ulcers and pressure sores that are infected with anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria produce an offensive odour and metronidazole is used to kill the bacteria and hence reduce the smell.
Metronidazole is also applied to the skin to treat a chronic inflammatory condition called acne rosacea. In this condition there is long-term inflammation of the cheeks, nose, chin, forehead, and/or eyelids, with increased redness or acne-like eruptions in these areas of the face. The metronidazole helps control any infection and inflammation.
What is it used for?
Chronic skin disorder called rosacea, where the nose and cheeks are abnormally inflamed and red
Reducing the odour associated with malodorous fungating tumours
